Online travel portals are the segment with the greatest growth potential in the travel industry. The speed with which this industry is developing is continually presenting our member companies with new and complex technical challenges. The Verband Internet Reisevertrieb (VIR - Association of Internet Travel Marketing) provides unanimity and an important platform for meeting those challenges. Only through the mutual exchange of information can we can make ourselves fit for the future.

In the five years since its establishment on 2 November 2004 the VIR has created binding and reliable quality standards for the online travel industry by setting up the travel arbitration board and TÜV certification.

Ecological responsibility also plays a major role for all member companies of the VIR: under the umbrella of the VIR they were the first travel agents to work uniformly with the climate protection programme Atmosfair.

We do important enlightenment work through our collaboration with educational institutions, by promoting young talent through our innovation competition "Springboard" and by our patronage of the event "Destination meets online". At the same time we give the industry new impetus.

By way of our regular studies of the online travel sector and our proficient market research on all aspects of travel and security we provide binding information and facts relating to the online tourism market.

In the future the Verband Internet Reisevertrieb (VIR) will continue to be a mouthpiece for the needs and requirements of the online travel industry; the problems of data quality and the responsible handling of customer data acquired via the web being one of our prioritized topics. New technologies such as the social media domain and the observance of these in our capacity as part of a marketing organization are among the biggest challenges that confront the VIR.

The structure of the association was therefore adapted in 2009 to meet the requirements of the market by the setting-up of an advisory board and of a new form of membership for sponsors who want to signal their proximity to the association and together with us wish to set new standards.

The whole travel industry profits from a stable overall travel and tourism environment, whereby the VIR is acquiring a very special role in view of the high growth rates in Internet usage.
